1830s

Around the time that Tom and Laura arrived, work was likely already well under way for the construction of the new gristmill.

The new gristmill, which was completed, and all necessary equipment was relocated to the new mill. To power the mill, a new dam across the river was built to direct water to the waterwheels of both the gristmill and sawmill—these are noted as being horizontal tub wheels and not large vertical water wheels. Accounts suggest that there were two small wheels that each powered a stone allowing the Jackson’s to run two sets of stones simultaneously, if they wished. The mill was likely completed and in heavy operation, but accounts from local residents recalled that a few years after it was completed a fire occurred and a great deal of damage was done to the structure. This was likely around 1836. The Jacksons undertook the task of rebuilding the mill. The mill on the location dates from a 1841, although quite of bit of repairs and replacement of worn-out parts occurred in the years that followed.
