Quilt Retreat Weekend Workshops

Weekend workshops will be held Friday, March 17, 7 p.m. through Sunday, March 18, 11:30 a.m.

Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon Instructor: Kathy Lanham
Level: Confident Beginner
Technique: Machine
Materials Fee: None; students will purchase own pattern, fabrics, and supplies
Description: Choose pre-cut strips or cut yardage with a contrasting background for unique log cabin style blocks. Rotate the blocks to create different layouts. Great quilt for the guy in your life (just in time for graduation!) Finished size: 74" x 74". Pattern by Laurie Shifrin Designs.

Building Blocks II: Half-square Triangles

Building Blocks II Instructor: Barbara Jones
Skill Level: Beginner
Technique: Machine
Materials Fee: None; students will purchase and bring own fabrics and supplies
Note: Building Blocks I is NOT required to register for Building Blocks II.
Description: Building on last year's Building Blocks I course, this class will continue to discuss fundamental quilting terms, skills and techniques. We will refresh ourselves on proper cutting methods and achieving an accurate 1/4" seam, and explore all the various techniques for making half-square triangles. Once students have tested the different methods, they can then decide what they prefer to complete their chosen block or quilt design.
Keep in mind that, just as with the Building Blocks I class, there is no set pattern or quilt design for this course. A number of block designs will be demonstrated so that students may choose for themselves how they wish to set their newly-minted units. This course is intended to help quilting novices build a basic knowledge base and skill set that will give them confidence in their ability to produce consistently sized and accurately pieced blocks, and consequently, reduce frustration and add joy to the quiltmaking process. It is the second in a planned series of skill-building workshops. Each subsequent class will handle a new technique—suggestions are welcome.

Diamond Alley

Diamond Alley Instructor: Winona Bays
Level: Beginner
Technique: Machine
Materials Fee: $7 for pattern available from instructor; ruler necessary for project will also be available from instructor for $21; bring own fabric and other supplies
Description: This quilt is very easy to make; it just fives the illusion of being hard. It can be made scrappy, out of one color, or with variegated fabric that gives you all the shades of one color. Finished size: 66" x 88".

Dimensional Embroidery--A Brazilian Embroidery Variation

Dimensional Embroidery Instructor: Linda Vaughn
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Technique: Hand
Materials Fee: $10 for kit which will include fabric, Pellon backing, thread and pattern
Description: Discover a relaxing new hand work technique for those hours spent in front of the TV. This class will focus on the embroidery stitches needed to make beautiful raised embroidery flowers and foliage. These can then be used to turn an ordinary item into something extraordinary. Many of the stitches can also be used for crazy quilting. Once the stitches are mastered, we will work on using them to make a block with a basket and flowers. You can continue to make different baskets or use a single one to make a pillow or wall hanging. All you need to bring to class is a thimble and scissors (needle, scraps to practice on and thread will be provided). Other patterns by Martha Offutt will be available for purchase.

Your confidence will inspire you to learn how to stitch the beautiful feathers and motifs in Part 3: Basic Feathering. There are various ways to stitch feathers. One is right for you! Modern Mosaics

Modern Mosaics Instructor: Patti Anderson
Level: Confident Beginner to Advanced

Learn new piecing and cutting methods to help make these blocks go together quickly. Note that the blocks do not necessarily have to be square—you can change your mind as you construct. The hardest part of this quilt will be deciding which fabrics to use.

Mystery  Quilt

Instructor: Ruth Ann Johnson
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Technique: Machine
Materials Fee: $1 for handouts
Description: It is a Mystery, all right, but it is friendly. Beginning quilter with little experience, or very advanced quilters with lots of experience will enjoy making this quilt. It is easy; however, it is a little time consuming. It will utilize lots of dark colored scrap strips (2-1/2" x 22") plus fabric for joining those scrappy fabrics. The idea with this quilt is to share extra scrap strips with others in the class. Everyone will have as many different dark colored pieces as possible. When you arrive back home, you will be able to point to different pieces and say, "These pieces are from my friends at Jackson's Mill"—and solve the Mystery.

Purse Instructor: Sandy Sheffield
: Beginner to Advanced

Materials Fee: Kit will be available for pre-order
Description: Purses come in all sizes and shapes and with some of the new hardware, you can make them very professional looking. We will make the Maddy Lynn bag shown in the picture which has been adjusted in size and has an outside hidden pocket. The bottom half with the squares in made on grid. Come and make a nice purse.
